The Complexity Of Life Requires More Than Love

Parents Are Not Cruise Directors

I must confess that I had not given much thought to training children prior to having them. We believed that love would cover it all. We didn’t need discipline or structure or regulation in our home. Love would solve all of life’s problems. Our first child, consequently, spent her early years in a very child-centered environment. Our goal was to make sure she was happy and having fun. It was only after the second child, and then two more, came along that we truly began to realize that we are not the cruise directors for our children’s voyage through a fantasy world of blissful irresponsibility. When I realized that my main job was to equip my children, not merely entertain them, my vision for parenting changed radically. Yes, we would instill in them the joy of living, but they would certainly not be strangers to hard work or to accountability for their actions.
