Income Better Than Silver, Gold, And Bitcoin

Parents Are Not Cruise Directors

A main purpose of childhood is to prepare children for adulthood. It is not to push them or to force them to use abilities that have yet to develop, but to slowly, sequentially prepare them to be productive adults and to know the satisfaction of productivity. They already know how to be children. They need guidance in learning to be adults.

Only after turning to the true source of wisdom, the Word of God, did we realize that our obligation to train our children went still further. It wasn’t enough that we had happy, well-adjusted kids who were gaining discipline and practical living skills. We needed to help them learn wisdom. Indeed, gaining wisdom and knowledge of God is a lifelong pursuit. The earlier we encourage our children to seek wisdom, rather than mere earthly knowledge, the more obedient we are as parents. Such preparation blesses us and our children.

               The writer of Proverbs states,

“Happy are those who find wisdom, and those who get understanding, for her income is better than silver, and her revenue better than gold. She is more precious than jewels, and nothing you desire can compare with her” (Proverbs 3:13-15, NRSV).

By training our children to be wise, responsible adults, we are giving them the most precious inheritance. More than that, we are giving in them a gift to their future spouse, children, employers, coworkers, friends, and their community at large.
