Lab#2 Make A Procedure

Parents are the most reliable experts on their own children.

As a society, we have given over so much to institutions and experts. We rely on them to teach academics, sex, drugs, death education, consumer education, conflict resolution, and more. Those needs that are not filled in school are fair game for willing entrepreneurs who will teach our kids sewing, cooking, woodworking, babysitting, manners, or study skills—for a fee. The actual cost is dollars, lost family time, and loss of control over our children.

In light of increasing youth violence, many writers have commented on family time and its value. A recent Wall Street Journal article reports:

A discussion group of Maine adults was organized by pollster Peter D. Hart to explore declining values. Just what, specifically, are they concerned about? One huge problem, they say, is that family routines have broken down. “It used to be, you came home from school, and an hour and a half later you all sat down and ate dinner. Then you watched one show on TV and did your homework,” says Nancy Thompson, a middle-aged telephone operator. “You had a Sunday afternoon dinner. There’s none of that today. It’s all haphazard.” The consequences are serious: lack of involvement by parents in the lives of their children.… In a nationwide survey of 2,011 adults last week by Mr. Hart and Robert Teeter for the Wall Street Journal and NBC News, a whopping 83 percent of the respondents said that lack of involvement in their children’s lives is a “very serious problem” facing society.
