Normalization is the process of making some new norm. One generation’s values may not be the same as the next. An adoption process takes place very subtly. Evidence of this creeps into society in various ways. Dictionaries are one way. I came across this interesting difference looking up the word “transition” in a couple of dictionaries. Look at the first 60+ words of each.
Webster’s Dictionary 1828 – TRANSITION
Passage from one place or state to another; change; as the transition of the weather form hot to cold. Sudden transitions are sometimes attended with evil effects. The spots are of the same color throughout, there being an immediate transition from white to black.
Google Dictionary 2018 – TRANSITION the process or a period of changing from one state or condition to another. the process by which a person permanently adopts the outward or physical characteristics of the gender with which they identify, as opposed to those associated with their birth sex. The process may or may not involve measures such as hormone therapy and gender reassignment surgery.
It will not take one long to find out that Webster’s Dictionary is filled with examples taken from Scripture. I’ve never really paid attention to Google’s bent until now. I wonder how those behind each dictionary would answer the following questions.
- Which is more important, sexual freedom or religious freedom?
- What is the value system we are trying to build civilization upon now?
- Will it work?
