History Will Judge Bradley Manning And Laud Him For Telling The Truth

A former career intelligence officer and longtime critic of America’s overseas debacles compares Bradley Manning to America’s greatest patriots.

When I was asked to speak at last Saturday’s rally at Fort Meade in support of Pvt. Bradley Manning, I wondered how I might provide some context around what Manning is alleged to have done. (In my talk, so as not to think I had to insert the word “alleged” into every sentence, I asked for unanimous consent to using the indicative rather than the subjunctive mood.)

What jumped into my mind was the letter Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote from the Birmingham City jail in April 1963, from which I remembered this:

“Like a boil that can never be cured as long as it is covered up, but must be opened with all its pus-flowing ugliness to the natural medicines of air and light, injustice must likewise be exposed, with all of the tension its exposing creates, to the light of human conscience and the air of national opinion before it can be cured.”

I suggested that this is precisely what Bradley Manning did when he saw the need to uncover war crimes like the indiscriminate murder of civilians and torture he witnessed in Baghdad and read about in cables.

What he had become witness to was the inevitable result of aggressive war, which the post-World War II Nuremberg Tribunal called the “supreme international crime,” differing from other war crimes only inasmuch as it contains within itself the “accumulated evil of the whole.” Was he to obey orders to keep his mouth shut? Or was he to follow his conscience and lance this ugly boil of accumulated evil?

What I especially admire in Bradley Manning is this: his ability, at the age of 22, to discern that there can be a hierarchy of sometimes conflicting values, and that from a moral standpoint some values dwarf others in importance.

Apparently, Manning saw in ending the mindless slaughter of aggressive war, with its accumulated evil — its torture and other pus-flowing ugliness — what ethicists define as a “supervening value,” one that outweighs lesser values like keeping a secrecy promise required as a condition of employment.

Manning chose to break that promise. And Dr. King, in his Letter from the Birmingham Jail, addressed something analogous. King insisted “an individual who breaks a law that conscience tells him is unjust,” and risks jail in order “to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the very highest respect for law.”

When Generals Lie

Bradley Manning’s courage hits a personal nerve in me. At age 28, I had an opportunity to blow the whistle on the lies of the senior U.S. military in Saigon. The evidence was documentary (a SECRET/EYES ONLY cable from Saigon); indeed, it was hard for me to believe the generals would put their deceit so explicitly in writing, but they did.

Younger readers need to be reminded that, at the time (August 1967) there was no WikiLeaks, but the New York Times was an independent newspaper prone to publishing documentary evidence critical of the government. The Times had not yet gotten into the habit of seeking prior approval from the White House.

Six years older than Bradley Manning was when he summoned the courage to do the right thing — and with college courses in ethics in my moral quiver — I nonetheless, well, quivered.

I blew a unique opportunity to let Americans know that, duty, honor, country be damned, unconscionable corruption at senior levels in Saigon and in Washington had badly misled us on the war and that our GIs and the Vietnamese were being chewed up in a March of Folly.

And that opportunity came months before so many got chewed up in the January-February 1968 Communist countrywide offensive, ushering in the second half of the bloody war in Vietnam. (I discussed this last year, in connection with the WikiLeaks disclosures, in “How the Truth Can Save Lives.”)

As for Bradley Manning, he would not sequester himself in a moral vacuum. He had the insight and summoned the moral courage to follow his conscience and act with integrity.

Manning’s Motive

In his correspondence with Adrian Lamo, the man who betrayed him, Manning said he wanted people “to see the truth, because without information you cannot make informed decisions as a public.” He wrote that he hoped his disclosures would lead to “world-wide discussion, debate and reform.”

Knowledge will forever govern ignorance and a people who mean to be their own Governors, must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives."  ~ James Madison]

Manning’s first disclosure that came to light was the Apache helicopter gun-barrel video, with sound, showing the indiscriminate murder of a dozen Iraqi civilians, including two Reuters journalists and the wounding of two little children. The incident was duly “investigated” by the Army, and the shooting was deemed to be consistent with what is permitted by the Army’s Rules of Engagement.

Whoa! Official Washington cannot tolerate such disclosures if it remains intent on waging aggressive war, with its accumulated evil, in secret. So the Obama administration set out to make Bradley Manning an object lesson about what will happen to anyone tempted to divulge these sorts of secrets.

For such truth-telling, this is what you can expect: solitary confinement, cruel, inhuman, and degrading punishment; and a very long wait before being brought to the military pre-trial charade that I watched with others at Fort Meade, Maryland, last weekend.

President Barack Obama, commander-in-chief of Bradley Manning, and those trying him have already said Manning “broke the law” – and be damned with the countervailing moral imperative of truth-telling when faced with clear evidence of unpunished war crimes.

Command influence, anyone? What’s wrong with this picture? Quick. Someone explain to me how those subordinate to the commander-in-chief can be expected to hold an impartial inquiry, since they already know Manning “broke the law.” The top boss said so.

What About the Damage?

Still, whatever the measure of Manning’s technical “guilt,” the government’s hand-wringing over the alleged damage from the disclosures of diplomatic cables has been “significantly overwrought.” How do we know? Defense Secretary Robert Gates said so, in those words. And this time he was telling the truth.

Gates mocked the professional alarums sounded by officialdom and dismissed the negative impact of the disclosed cables as “fairly modest.” He had learned a lesson from the earlier WikiLeaks disclosures of documents about Afghanistan and Iraq, when normally sober folks like Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Mike Mullen were accusing Manning of having “blood on his hands.”

When Sen. Carl Levin, Chair of the Armed Services Committee, asked Gates to provide proof in writing of such claims, Gates could adduce no evidence that actual people — as opposed to reputations — had been harmed.

It’s also instructive to see how selective prosecutions work in Official Washington. Manning may face life imprisonment for exposing the slaughter of civilians and other serious crimes (as well as for revealing the absurd over-classification of U.S. government documents).

However, when President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney confess that they ordered waterboarding and other acts that have long been regarded as illegal torture, they and their subordinates are spared prosecution, presumably because to do otherwise would stir up a political mess.

Suddenly, clear violations of the law must be set aside as being outweighed by larger national considerations, i.e. political comity in Washington. But no such balancing act is available to spare Pvt. Manning possible life imprisonment for truth-telling, even when many experts believe much good has come from the disclosures, including inspiration for the Arab Spring’s ouster of dictators whose brutality and corruption were frankly described in the WikiLeaks cables.

Daniel Ellsberg has called Bradley Manning a hero, and that’s what he is. We need to find ways to tell the American people the full story. These days, they are not going to get the whole truth (or anything close to it) from the New York Times.

Tomorrow, March 7, 2011, an epic battle begins in Federal District Court. BVNH – one lone stubborn individual American vs. the might and fright of the US government – was charged with counterfeiting (Sec 485 and 486) after the FBI confiscated over 9 TONS of gold, silver, platinum and copper over three years ago. The lines are clearly drawn between an individual’s freedom, to come up with creative ways, such as barter to deal with government mismanagement of our economy and its continued nullification of our Constitution. Dear Liberty Dollar Supporters!

1. LD4 Trial Commences
BVNH contends that he has invented a new monetary device that is not prohibited by the law and that an individual can issue his own private voluntary barter currency (PVBC). Of course the gov disagrees. Unfortunately for the gov, it has no basis for its case. The truth is that the gov simply does not like the politically active national NORFED organization and its patriotic mission to “return America to a value based currency – one Liberty Dollar at a time” and has done everything possible, including arresting its principals to try and kill the Liberty Dollar.

But the gov has not stopped the Free Dollar Movement. A couple of dozen different currencies have already sprung up from the NORFED seeds. People have taken the issuance of money into their own hands because they are not happy with the failing non-Federal non-Reserve IOU Note and want something better. Something with value! While the gov assumed that the NORFED arrestees would cop a plea like the 95% of all people arrested. NO! That did not happen. Now the gov must prove beyond a reasonable doubt to the satisfaction of twelve jurors in the Statesville Division of the Western District of North Carolina that BVNH counterfeited US coins.

If the charges were not so serious, it would be laughable that anybody could confuse the one ounce Silver Liberty with a penny, nickel, dime, quarter, half-dollar or an Ike dollar! But that is the basis of the gov case! But it is even more bizarre. The gov would have the jury believe that a whopping 2-1/2 inch diameter Silver Liberty could be confused with the “current money.” Think that is incredibly dumb? Well they also “think” that the statue of King Kamehameha on the Hawaii Dala looks like a US coin and it is counterfeit too!

This gov has some very serious problems and it should solve those problems. It should not waste taxpayers’ money on such a wrong-headed trial. Unfortunately, the gov is not very bright and what they will do and have done since NORFED introduced the Liberty Dollar on October 1, 1998 is inadvertently popularize alternate currencies as the US dollar tanks. It almost seems like a plan to secretly support a value based currency but that would give the gov more credit than it deserves.

One thing is for sure. This landmark monetary case of the century will be decided one way or the other. Either the jury will cherish the American individualistic spirit or BVNH will mistakenly go to prison. It is an all or nothing. BVNH feels morally bound as a citizen of a Republic to do what he thinks is best for the country. He “thinks” that our country deserves a better money than the gov is providing. Hope you can stop by the Federal District Court in Statesville, North Carolina, as the trial will not be televised. Running time is approx. one month.

2. Everything is UP!
Metals are up. Commodities are up. Premiums are up. Sales are up. Stock market is up. Oil is up. Jobless claims are up. Margins are up. Food Stamps are up. Deficit is UP! And to no surprise, inflation is UP! Meanwhile, YOUR money is tanking unless you are holding value.

APMEX premiums are up. The premium over spot on a single one ounce house-brand silver round has risen from $1.50 a year ago to $2.69 a few months ago and is now $2.99. DOUBLE. Premium on US Mint Silver Eagles was less than $2.00 a year ago. A few months ago it went to $4.19 and is now $4.39! Hell, when NORFED started, silver was UNDER $5.00 an ounce and that was just a few years ago. Silver is still a tremendous buy… even at $30 or $40 or more!

You read that right. After such establishment “luminaries” as World Bank president Robert Zoellick [1], Warren Buffett’s father Howard [2], Jim Grant [3], and, most recently, Kansas City Fed president Thomas Hoenig [4], all voiced their support for a return to a gold standard, the most recent addition to the motley group of contrite voodoo shamans is none other than the man who is single handedly responsible for America’s addiction to cheap toxic credit, who spawned such destroyers of the middle class as the current Chair Creature, and who currently is the chief advisor in John Paulson’s crusade to gobble up every ounce of deliverable physical in the world: former Fed Chairman – Alan Greenspan!

In an interview with Fox Business, the man who refuses to go away into that good night: “We have at this particular stage a fiat money which is essentially money printed by a government and it’s usually a central bank which is authorized to do so. Some mechanism has got to be in place that restricts the amount of money which is produced, either a gold standard or a currency board, because unless you do that all of history suggest that inflation will take hold with very deleterious effects on economic activity… “There are numbers of us, myself included, who strongly believe that we did very well in the 1870 to 1914 period with an international gold standard.”

And a further stunner: Greenspan himself wonders if we really need a central bank. Now our only question: why couldn’t the maestro speak as clearly and coherently during his tenure that resulted in our current near-terminal financial state. And as a reminder, courtesy of Dylan Grice [5], if and when we do get a return to a gold standard there would be a need to reindex the monetary base to a real time equivalent price of gold, putting the price of the precious metal at about $6,300: “The US owns nearly 263m troy ounces of gold (the world’s biggest holder) while the Fed’s monetary base is $1.7 trillion. So the price of gold at which the US dollars would be fully gold-backed is currently around $6,300.” Click HERE for the article.

Please note I am opposed to any “Gold Standard” operated by the government. As noted economist Dr. Richard H. Timberlake said:
Gold standards were put in place by governments, and, in all but a very few cases, they have been managed by governments. A gold standard, especially “the” gold standard administered by a Treasury or central bank, is an illusory solution to monetary mischief. It would be just as subject to government tampering as any other institution managed by the state. Many statist central bankers, in fact, embrace a “gold standard” because it serves as a respectable cover for their traditional hands-on control. No, no “gold standard,” please.

CHICAGO (AFP) – Labor and religious leaders in Detroit announced plans Thursday to withdraw hundreds of millions of dollars from JPMorgan Chase to protest the bank’s refusal to freeze foreclosures in Michigan.

“This is a matter of life and death,” said Pastor Alexander Bullock of the Rainbow PUSH coalition.

“The words of Chase officials that they are willing to help the thousands who are living in undervalued homes and facing possible eviction is unconvincing in light of their refusal to seriously consider a moratorium on foreclosures.”

Some 1.42 million US homes have been lost to foreclosure since April 2009 in the wake of the subprime mortgage crisis, credit crunch and economic downturn.

While the pace is finally slackening, nearly 339,000 properties — or one in every 381 US housing units — received a foreclosure filing in August, according to RealtyTrac.

Economically hard-hit Michigan has been devastated by the combined crises and nearly 18,000 homes there were in foreclosure last month.

The withdrawal of funds from Chase was also prompted by the bank’s continuing ties with tobacco company RJ Reynolds Corp, the United Auto Workers union said in a statement.

RJ Reynolds has come under fire for refusing to engage in negotiations with labor organizers over allegations of low wages and unsafe working conditions at farms of contract growers in North Carolina.

“Chase needs to help unemployed homeowners in Michigan and underpaid farm workers in the Carolinas,” UAW President Bob King said.

“The bank could make a huge difference by suspending foreclosures and pressuring RJ Reynolds to do the right thing.”

About 1,000 demonstrators marched on Chase earlier this year.

At a subsequent meeting, union and faith leaders urged bank officials to implement a temporary foreclosure freeze and participate in a federal program to assist homeowners at risk of foreclosure.

Chase spokesman Tom Kelly declined to comment on the withdrawals, but noted that the bank has offered more than 900,000 mortgage modifications since the beginning of 2009 and that two of its 51 mortgage counseling centers are in the Detroit area.

The groups called for congressional hearings “on the failure of Chase and other banks to effectively implement federal programs calling for mortgage modifications to keep people in their homes” and urged others to close their Chase accounts.

A UAW spokeswoman declined to disclose exactly how much money was being withdrawn from Chase. But the statement said the total would be “hundreds of millions” of dollars.

1. Michael Badnarik Has Heart Attack
I regret to inform you that my personal friend, arch patriot, Constitution scholar,
2004 Presidential candidate and most recently President of the 2009 Continental
Congress had a heart attack on Tuesday, December 22. Michael was unconscious
and his condition was diagnosed as serious.

At the time of the heart attack, Michael was in Madison, Wisconsin attending
a hearing regarding a raw milk case. After the hearing he got in a car to go
to lunch with friends, He then slumped over. His friends attempted CPR and contacted
the paramedics. They attempted to revive him 3 times with no success. Upon the
4th attempt his heart was revived yet with erratic behavior. He was then taken
by helicopter to Gunderson Lutheran Hospital CCU in Lacrosse, WI and fitted
with a temporary pacemaker and a balloon pump to ease stress on his heart.
As of yesterday, Monday, December 28, Michael’s Mother, Elaine said that his
condition seems to have “backslid”.

ALAMOGORDO – Saturday’s planned protest of the Obama administration’s policies, organized by the Otero Tea Party Patriots, the Alamogordo Second Amendment Task Force and the Sons of Liberty Riders, will proceed as planned.
The Alamogordo Department of Public Safety approved two permits late Wednesday afternoon – one for the Tea Party Patriots and the other for the Second Amendment group.
The permits were filed Monday with the Alamogordo city clerk’s office, then forwarded to ADPS for review because, in addition to being billed as a protest against the health care reform bill that the U.S. Senate approved on Christmas Eve, it also was being called an open-carry event.
According to New Mexico law, anyone over the age of 19 is legal to open-carry a holstered firearm. A person can openly carry in most places, except in a bar, jail or prison, a school and other locations.

The key to freedom is to be able to have the ability to defend yourself, and if you dont have the tools to do that, then youre going to be at the mercy of whomever wants to put you away.

This is in a very large part due to Switzerland’s unique system of national defence, developed over the centuries.
Instead of a standing, full-time army, the country requires every man to undergo some form of military training for a few days or weeks a year throughout most of their lives.
Between the ages of 21 and 32 men serve as frontline troops. They are given an M-57 assault rifle and 24 rounds of ammunition which they are required to keep at home.
Once discharged, men serve in the Swiss equivalent of the US National Guard, but still have to train occasionally and are given bolt rifles. Women do not have to own firearms, but are encouraged to.
