Church of Stop Shopping Puts Holy Spirit Back into Christmas

A few days after a Wal-Mart employee was trampled to death by a crowd of over-eager bargain shoppers last month, a candlelight vigil was held outside the store to remember the man and to raise public awareness about the perils of excessive consumption and materialism in everyday life.

The vigil was led by a charismatic performance artist named Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping, a long-running bit of political and education performance art let by New York City actor Bill Talen.

“We’re addicted to shopping the way alcoholics are addicted to alcohol. We are stuffing a hole in our soul with things we are purchasing,” he says.

Talen says the best response is to build healthy neighborhoods and relationships.

“I don’t need to buy a product to talk to you,” he says. “Let’s just do it!”

Reverend Billy sermonizes about core human values – and shopping isn’t one of them.

How much does it cost to support one soldier in Afganistan?

great article
clipped from www.truthout.org

Recently, the Congressional Research Service released an amazing statistic – it will cost one million dollars a year to support one soldier for one year in Afghanistan.
Estimates for the numbers of contractors have been as high as one contractor for every soldier.
One of the reasons for the high costs of maintaining each soldier is the lack of oversight of private contractor billings over the course of these two wars. The Department of Defense (DOD), and especially the Army, has fought the auditors and the investigators in the military who have attempted to expose fraud, waste, overbillings and other abuses of costs in contractor contracts.
These unscrubbed, uninvestigated contractor billings promise to become the base costs for all the future contracts with all the fraud, waste and fat built into the baseline of future war contractor contracts.
So where are all the whistleblowers who have witnessed this fraud?
